India, Shiva Lingam, Banalinga, Buddha In Vitarka Mudra, 20th Century
India: Beautiful Shiva Lingam (Banalinga) with Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, depicted in the center performing the Vitarka Mudra. India, Madhya Pradesh state, 20th century. Weight: 2.7 kg. In very good condition; there is a chip on the right hand.
Found exclusively in the bed of the sacred Narmada River—one of India’s seven sacred rivers—these stones, naturally shaped by the river’s currents, are considered a natural manifestation of the god Shiva (svayambhu-liṅga, a self-born lingam). As a phallic symbol of Shiva, these stones are associated with the Yoni, a symbol of the goddess Shakti and feminine energy. Together, the lingam and yoni symbolize the entirety of the world: creation and dissolution, masculine and feminine, Shiva and Shakti united in the cosmic dance. All are ovoid in shape, yet each is unique; the model presented here differs from the others in its depiction of the Buddha in Vitarka Mudra, carved from a single block at its center.
