Belt Buckle with Floral Decoration – Brass and Champlevé Enamel – France, c. 1850–1860
A belt buckle crafted from cast and chased brass, featuring rich, polychrome champlevé enamel decoration. This piece of period costume jewelry, with its polylobed outline, displays a subtle variation in the composition of its cartouches: some feature scrolling foliage and floral motifs set against a deep, intense cobalt-blue background, while others take the form of eight-petaled flowers on a sky-blue ground, accented with red and white.
The reverse retains its original fastening mechanism, complete with a system of multiple prongs and a central bar mounted on a hinge.
In excellent condition for a piece of Second Empire-era costume jewelry. The enamel remains vibrant, retaining all its original freshness and vivid, multi-colored palette. Please note some minor losses and small chips to the enamel. The brass shows a beautiful, natural patina from use. The rear mechanism is complete and in perfect working order.
