A Viennese Secretary Desk From The Early 19th Century; Birch Burl Veneer
Early 19th-century Viennese secretary desk
Birch burl veneer
An early 19th-century Viennese secretary desk, a true masterpiece of cabinetmaking. Its softwood frame is meticulously veneered with magnificent birch burl featuring particularly decorative grain patterns.
Rectangular in shape and elegantly understated, the piece rests on four lion-paw-shaped legs, ebonized and gilded, offering a perfect balance between majestic stability and refined craftsmanship.
The lower doors, the drop-down panel, and the top drawer are delicately framed by fine plum wood moldings, while the side panels feature corresponding decorative motifs that blend harmoniously with the overall design.
On either side of the drop-down panel, two carved and gilded Moorish female figures stand gracefully, holding vases with dignified elegance and lending the piece a subtle touch of classicism.
Above the main drawer runs a gilded decorative band, adorned with Ochsenaugen (“ox-eyes”) motifs. Above this is a small central drawer, framed on either side by stepped uprights, lending the composition a particularly elegant architectural accent.
Opening the flap reveals an interior crafted with the utmost care. Seven small drawers in light maple frame the central compartment, the back of which is adorned with fine parquet marquetry.
The side panels are embellished with a delicate ebonized colonnade, between which are arranged skillfully angled mirrors. These create a fascinating semicircular effect and artistically accentuate the depth of the interior.
This exceptional piece, of remarkable craftsmanship, is particularly captivating for its preserved original locks, as well as the perfection of its finest details.
