Gilded Wood Altarpiece Panel
Carved and gilded wooden altarpiece element or tabernacle door – 18th century
An important religious ornament made of carved, molded, and gold-leafed wood, likely a tabernacle door or a panel from an altarpiece; a French work from the 18th century.
The panel features a Latin inscription in relief at its center:
“PAVETE AD SANCTUARIUM MEUM EGO DOMINUS”
(“Honor my sanctuary, I, the Lord” – Leviticus 19:30).
The decoration features an elegant rococo frame adorned with pearls, foliage, and small flowers, typical of religious ornamentation from the second half of the 18th century. The original gilding retains a beautiful patina with signs of wear that enhance its authenticity.
The reverse reveals an oak panel mounted on the original frame.
Condition: in good presentable condition with signs of wear consistent with its age. Please note a missing section in the lower part, as well as damage and missing sections on the side (see photographs). These flaws do not detract from the overall decorative quality.
