Quercy Walnut Oil Jug – 18th century

A beautiful and imposing walnut oil jug made of glazed terracotta, a traditional folk craft from the Quercy region dating from the 18th century.

With a generously rounded shape, it features thick terracotta covered with a dark glaze—brown-black with greenish hues—characteristic of antique utilitarian pottery. The surface, irregular and heavily textured, retains all the character of an antique artisanal firing.

The jug features a wide, circular neck with a thick rim, a small side spout, and several ribbon-shaped handles, some of which are adorned with deep vertical grooves. This design facilitated the handling and transport of a vessel intended for storing and pouring walnut oil, a traditional product of particular importance in the Quercy region.

A very beautiful example of folk art and rural tradition, remarkable for its proportions, its sculptural presence, and its lovely patina from use.

Condition: in good overall condition considering its age. Signs of wear, firing irregularities, glaze chips, pitting, and visible signs of use, particularly on the neck and base. These characteristics attest to its use and contribute to the authenticity and charm of this antique pottery.
