Japanese Armor, Tachi-dö Type Mid-edo Period

Japanese Tachi-dō-style armor made of hon-kozane, fully laced in one piece.

Complete set including:

• Kabuto (helmet) made of lacquered iron, Suji-bachi style, in the Kōshōzan shape, consisting of 32 lamellae, with a 5-row shikoro made of lacquered iron. The fukigaeshi are adorned with the family kamon. The lining is present but torn; it can be restored relatively easily.
• Maedate made of carved wood depicting an Oni, a demon from Japanese folklore.
• Menpō made of lacquered iron, in two removable parts held together by a system of pins, with a 4-row yodarekake made of lacquered iron. Some elements are missing from the bottom row.
• Dō (chest plate) made entirely of hon-kozane and laced together, accompanied by a 7-row sode made of lacquered iron.
• Includes the back standard-bearer (gattari).
• Includes, a particularly rare feature, a chainmail vest-style neck guard.
• Kote, haidate, and suneate matching the set.
• Period wooden transport case included.

Overall condition: a beautiful, cohesive set, entirely complete, displaying excellent consistency. Some signs of normal wear are present, notably a torn inner helmet lining and a few missing sections on the lower yodarekake due to missing lacing in places, though these do not detract from the armor’s overall presentation.
