English work, second half of the 19th century

Deep orange carnelian seal, cut in a cushion shape with rounded corners and engraved in intaglio with an emblem combining three motifs. At the top, the head of a horse with a flowing mane; below, an eagle with outstretched wings, captured in mid-flight; in the field, on the left, a winged trident. Three attributes arranged in a single composition, each retaining its own distinct clarity.

Together, these motifs form an allegory of triumph over the three realms: the earth, represented by the horse—a classical image of victory and momentum; the air, represented by the eagle in flight—an emblem of Jupiter and sovereignty; the sea by Neptune’s trident, here endowed with wings that reinforce the idea of ascent and glory.

The repertoire of Neoclassical engravers, drawing on Greco-Roman intaglios and the collections of Winckelmann and Tassie, favored these emblematic compositions in which multiple symbols interact within the field to form a figurative motto.
