A Gold Ring Set With A Late Roman Onyx Cameo. Helmeted Bust.
Mount: Gold, later
Stone: 13 × 19 mm
Ring sizes: UK S · US 9¼ · FR 59 (resizeable)
Total weight: 16.33 g
Condition: Some chippings and small lacks to the stone; wear marks; mount in good condition
Provenance
European collection; acquired on the market, early 2000s
A late Roman imperial period two-layer onyx cameo, set in a single gold mount with rounded bezel. The creamy-white upper layer is cut in vigorous high relief against the dark background, depicting a bust facing right. The figure wears a structured headdress - consistent with a helmet in simplified Late Antique convention - and the chlamys.
Identification with Athena remains hypothetical in the absence of the characteristic aegis; a military or heroic bust cannot be ruled out. Wear marks and small chips are consistent with the gem's age and prolonged use.
A comparable example is listed in Martin Henig, The Content Cameos, p. 76, no. 137.
Each gem comes with a certificate of authentication signed by Cresci experts Bianca Massard and Gabriele Vangelli, including additional documentation if available and a full description of the piece.
