A Gold Ring Set With A Three-layered Agate Cameo By L. Michelini (1798-1858, Rome). Bacchante
Cameo: 24 × 35 mm | Gross weight: 25 g
Ring size: K½ (UK) / 5½ (US)
Cameo: First half of the 19th century
A fine three-layer agate cameo set in a modern yellow gold ring mount. The oval cameo depicts a Bacchante in right-facing profile, her flowing hair adorned with a wreath of vine leaves and grape clusters — their warm honey tone carved from the stone's innermost stratum — and her drapery complemented on the right shoulder by an animal skin, rendered with a ram's head and forelegs in the same rich amber layer. The figure itself is executed in the stone's creamy white stratum, set against a deep black ground, creating a striking trichromatic contrast that speaks to the carver's consummate mastery of the material. Signed on the reverse: Michelini.
Luigi Michelini was born in Rome in 1798 and trained under Giuseppe Girometti, one of the foremost gem engravers of the Neoclassical period.
