Hercules, the most famous of the Greco-Roman heroes, embodies strength, courage, and victory over adversity. Depicted here beardless, in the radiance of youth, he evokes the hero on the threshold of his Twelve Labors—an image of virile virtue and protection. His portrait, one of the most common on Roman intaglios, served as both a personal emblem and a talisman: to wear Hercules was to place oneself under the patronage of the mortal who became a god through his valiance alone.
