Hercules (Heracles), a civilizing hero and embodiment of virtus, was among the most frequently depicted figures on Roman signet rings, serving both as a talisman of strength and an emblem of virtue. The isolated head, with no visible remains of the Nemean lion’s skin, refers to the so-called “bearded Hercules” type, which was widespread throughout the Empire.
