The subject, the Roman matron— the idealized noble matron, an emblem of dignity and marital virtue —, a type that the Neoclassical era drew directly from Roman imperial portraiture: the high, architecturally styled hairstyle revives the fashion of the Antonine empresses (see Faustina).Born of the Grand Tour’s taste for engraved gemstones, these carnelian portraits of ancient ladies were among the most sought-after subjects of the era, worn as personal seals and emblems of classical culture.
