These semi-precious stones, meticulously carved in the recessed style (intaglios) or in relief (cameos), have been admired and coveted since antiquity. This craze reached its peak during the Neoclassical period in Rome. In the late 18th century, workshops such as the Paoletti workshop, located at 49 Piazza di Spagna, produced matrices made of glass paste based on originals preserved in the most famous collections. These molds allowed them to mass-produce impressions in scagliola (a type of plaster or stucco) intended for travelers, collectors, artists, and other enthusiasts passing through Rome.
