Snuffbox In Gold And Polychrome Enamel, Jean George Rémond & Compagnie, Geneva, 1804–1811
An exceptional rectangular gold snuffbox with rounded corners, crafted by the renowned Jean George Rémond & Compagnie workshop in Geneva between 1804 and 1811. The lid is embellished with a magnificent hand-painted polychrome enamel plaque depicting Virgil reading the *Aeneid* to Octavia and Emperor Augustus, a fascinating subject inspired by classical antiquity. The central scene is framed by a refined gold border decorated using the taille d’épargne technique, while the sides and base feature elegant guilloché panels covered in translucent enamel in deep shades of blue and black. The interior is entirely lined with gold. It measures 9 cm in length and weighs 158 grams. An extraordinary example of Geneva goldsmithing and enamelwork from the Empire period, of exceptional artistic, historical, and collectible value.
