Miniature Gothic-style Travel Clock, Vienna Mid-19th Century
A rare and finely crafted travel clock, only 9.5 cm high, encased in a red leather-clad, pointed arch box with intricate blackened metal Gothic-style mounts. The piece is signed Alexis David, Goldsmith, Rue de Castiglione 5, Paris, and beautifully combines horology with sacred art and goldsmithing.
When opened, the triptych-like case reveals a vivid deep blue enamel background, scattered with gold stars, featuring:
a circular enameled dial with Arabic numerals and lozenge-shaped hands,
a moon phase aperture beneath the dial, also adorned with stars,
a lever for setting the movement, located at the base.
On the back, winding holes and the original finely pierced brass key complete the ensemble.
A devotional object for travelers, evoking the intimacy of a portable shrine. This clock embodies the Romantic Gothic revival spirit and exquisite miniature engineering.
