Heights: 43, 41, 39, 39 cm (without bases)
A fine ensemble of four figures belonging to the celebrated 18th-century Neapolitan Nativity tradition. The heads and limbs are modelled in polychrome terracotta with striking glass eyes, while the bodies are made of wire and tow, allowing flexible and lifelike poses.
Figure h. 43 cm: distinguished man with staff, green coat trimmed with gilt braid.
Figure h. 41 cm: young gentleman in crimson velvet and gilt embroidery.
Figure h. 39 cm: vigorous peasant in worn clothes and rustic shoes.
Figure h. 39 cm: bald man with expressive features, wearing a golden damask coat.
The individuality of the physiognomies and the refined costumes testify to the work of a high-quality workshop, consistent with the great Neapolitan presepe tradition of the 18th century.
