Silver Coffee Pot By Pietro Borrani, Turin, Circa 1840
Important silver coffee pot made in Turin around 1840 by the silversmith Pietro Borrani, known supplier to the Royal House of Savoy. The vessel stands on three paw feet and is richly decorated in relief with scrolling foliage and vegetal motifs in late Neoclassical taste. The spout is strikingly shaped as a horse’s head, adding strong sculptural character, while the curved handle is crafted in ebonized wood. The lid is surmounted by an elegant pinecone finial. The quality of the workmanship, the elaborate decoration and the Turin hallmarks make this piece a refined example of mid-19th century Piedmontese silverwork.
