***************

By Pierre Jean DUMONT (1884–1936)
Normandy Post-Impressionist School
Oil on canvas: LA RUE DAMIETTE IN ROUEN
Signed lower right.
Dimensions: 65 x 82 cm.
Carved wooden frame with an “old gold” patina.

A small touch-up, visible on the reverse side near the frame joint, was made during the cleaning of the work by the ROLLIN Gallery in Rouen.
Slight damage to the frame.

François Lespinasse, a specialist and expert on the Norman School, summarizes Pierre Dumont’s biography as follows:
1903–1905: Early paintings and encounters with Louvrier, Pinchon, Fréchon, and Delattre
1905–1908: “Fauve” period characterized by broad, vigorous brushstrokes; landscapes of the Rouen area, Île Lacroix, Varengeville, and harvest scenes… rendered in pure colors.
He met Angrand, Fréchon, Matisse, Vlaminck, Friez, Marquet, and Derain.
1908–1927: Period of portraits, including those of Pinchon and Apollinaire, punctuated by a brief foray into Cubism, notably the famous “Homage to Cézanne”
1910–1927: Gradual development of his own unique style with the series featuring the Rouen cathedrals, the Rue de l’Epicerie, still lifes, the Paris quays, and Notre-Dame…
From that point on, he suffered several strokes accompanied by delirious fits of rage, and in 1934, paralyzed in his right hand, he stopped painting. He produced a few paintings using his “left hand” and died in April 1936 at the age of 52.
