RAMÓN PRATS
1928 - 2003
Ramón Prats was born on September 26, 1928, in Barcelona, Spain, into a family deeply connected to the art world; he was the son of a renowned Catalan sculptor. His passion for artistic creation led him to study at several prestigious institutions: he began his studies at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas in Santo Domingo, before continuing his training at the Escuela de Artes Gráficas in Havana, Cuba. Later, his talent took him to New York, where he immersed himself in the art scene at the Art Students League and collaborated with the Associated American Artists gallery.
Throughout his career, Prats left his mark on some of the world’s most iconic locations; notably, in 1952, he helped create José Vela Zanetti’s mural at the United Nations headquarters in New York, and he painted murals in Santo Domingo and Mexico City. His work has transcended borders, having been featured in more than 80 solo and group exhibitions throughout the Americas, Asia, and Europe.
In 1983, his exceptional career earned him the distinction of “Spanish Artist of the Year” from the International House of New Orleans. He was also chosen by the Spanish Consulate to represent his country’s artists during celebrations marking the discovery of the Americas.
Ramón Prats’ legacy lives on in Mexico: in 2001, the city of Cuernavaca honored him for his contribution to art, while the Universidad de Morelos dedicated two major exhibitions to him, celebrating his “creative universe .”
It was in Mexico, in fact, that the Catalan painter found the sunshine, space, and serenity he needed to reconnect with himself and with the essence of his art. In this environment bathed in light and calm, Prats was able to rediscover his pictorial voice and the self-assertion that characterized him: “This is who I am.”
Leading a simple life and devoting himself entirely to his work, Ramón Prats has become an internationally renowned figure, whose work remains a vibrant testament to his creativity and passion for art.
