Large Left-handed Dagger With A Re-pierced Blade

This large left-handed dagger is Spanish; it can be dated to the late 16th century or the first half of the17th century. When you hold it in your hand, you realize that left-handed daggers, when actually used in combat, were of large size. This is certainly true for this one, as it measures a total of 49cm, with a sturdy 35-cm blade.  During the 17th century, this type of dagger was gradually replaced in Spain by so-called “sail-shaped guard ” daggers (= daga de vela) .
BLADE: After a 3.5 cm ricasso, the blade takes on a six-sided profile, with two deep lateral fullers pierced with small holes. These extend along most of the lenght of blade. In the center of the blade, there is a section pierced with three long openings. On this central sections between the pierced areas, there is a small chiseled decoration that is likely the manufacturer’s mark. Blade length= 35 cm, width at the ricasso = 2.9 cm, thickness at the ricasso = 6 mm
The way the fuller end near thepoint suggests that this blade may be a war rapier blade that has been reshaped, or simply a blade that was once slightly longer and has been shortened.  However, if this is the case, the reshaping of the point is ancient and contemporary with the dagger itself, since the shape is uniform and the patina is exactly the same as on the rest of the blade.  
GUARD : This is a guard whose quillons are curved toward the blade, forming an angle of approximately 30 degrees forward relative to the plane of the blade. This design, intended to block an opponent’s blade, confirms that this dagger is indeed intended for combat. A large ring provides protection for the fingers. Decorated with oblique grooves on the quillons and theprotective ring.
POMMEL : It is cylindrical, decorated with oblique grooves like the guard. It is topped by a small knob to which the blade tang is riveted.
GRIP :I t is octagonal with slightly rounded corners and covered with a complex binding pattern made of a type of twisted brass. The ferrule rings, in a braided crown design known as “Turk's heads,” appear to be made of copper; they are present and in perfect condition.
This dagger, with its interesting re-pierced blade, will fit seamlessly into a collection of early period weapons.
