**************
Very rare baluster-shaped pewter pitcher with a cylindrical base and a doucine-shaped foot, a quarter-round bowl, and a domed lid with a plain, curved thumbhole.
A barely legible maker’s mark (?) stamped on the lid.
A dented, partially legible maker’s mark on the outer bottom by Joze Antonio FRIAS, active from 1701.
Height: 24.7 cm.
PORTUGAL (PORTO), First half of the 18th century
A piece of medieval style in good condition, with a natural marbled patina. This pitcher has not been polished for many decades...I can have it polished if the buyer wishes, at no additional cost, to restore its original luster.
The hallmarks were deliberately defaced at certain periods in history when it could be quite dangerous to possess objects bearing royal symbols—in this case, a crown—in one’s home...The same was true in France on numerous occasions at the end of the 18th century
Items from this source are extremely rare (even there...!) and are most often unhallmarked. Indeed, while Spain supplied much of Europe with tin ore for three centuries, Spanish and Portuguese pewter pieces are of the utmost rarity.
An identical piece and its hallmark are reproduced in “Estanhos portugueses” by Rolando van Zeller (See the last two photographs).
