**************
Pewter shoulder-bodied pitcher featuring a plinth base, straight-sided body, and an S-shaped thumbpiece with a molded crest.
Unidentified maker's mark: monogram "C.M" within a hexagonal cartouche.
Internal base gauging mark: "M.D" (Saint-Denis standard).
Height: 26.5 cm.
Paris, 18th century.
This maker's mark remains unidentified; four masters are potential candidates: Claude Mulot (admitted 1717), Claude Magny (admitted 1725), Charles Maucomble (recorded 1725), and Claude Mutinot (admitted 1725). It could also be the work of a master operating "outside the walls" (just beyond the city limits).
The gauging mark, the piece's typology, and its five-lug hinge clearly place its origin in Paris.
These pitchers served as standard wine measures under the Ancien Régime.
