Volumetric Measure In Pewter - Caen, 19th Century
Artist: Mulot
Free shipping within mainland France via La Poste or Mondial Relay.
**************
Cylindrical pewter volumetric measure with an overhanging lid and straight thumb marker, measuring liters.
Marques :
1° - Imperial crown hallmark.
2° - A. MULOT hallmark, active from 1844: MULOT A CAEN 18(44).
Height: 21 cm.
CAEN (LOWER NORMANDY), Mid-19th century.
In perfect condition.
The metric system was established in December 1799. However, it took several decades to become established due to resistance to change from users, but little by little these uniform cylindrical measures eventually replaced the jugs which, it is true, presented a variety of interesting shapes characteristic of their place of manufacture, but also an infinite number of different measurements from one town to another and often even from one village to another, however close they might be. This significantly complicated trade.
These measurements of the Metric System had to be checked annually by an agent of the Weights and Measures Service in order to ensure "good measurement" to the consumer.
A fun little detail: This 1799 law has never been repealed, and you could still today ask the café or restaurant owner to check the contents of your wine glass with these measures that gauge from centiliters to double liters... Something I highly recommend!
