**************

Pewter PITCHER with a shoulder shape, inverted truncated cone body, oblique straight goblet and acorn thumb.
Control mark with the unpublished year: crowned C / S(EMUR) / 1770.
Hugues MELOT's mark received as master around 1735: crowned melon / H.MELOT.
Gauge: 0.589 liters corresponding to the ½ Pint of La Charité-sur-Loire
Height: 20.4 cm.
SEMUR EN AUXOIS, End of the 18th century and very probably before the revolutionary period.

It is an understatement to describe this provenance as extremely rare. In fact, to date, only four masters are known to have been active in the 18th century in this small Burgundian center. Two pitchers were in the former Daniel ALLIX collection and reproduced in the catalogue of the exhibition at the Hôtel-Dieu de BEAUNE in 2007.
Bibliography: “Pewter pottery in Burgundy” by Roger Verdier and Daniel Allix

In good condition, consolidation is noted at the junction of the tab and the lid.
Note the phonic similarity between the name of the master and the symbol of his hallmark
.
