Miniature - Carved Cup - Turned And Engraved Wood - Folk Art - Massif Central - Auvergne
Dating: Late XIXᵉ century
Origine : France - Massif central, Auvergne
Provenance: Musée de la Vie du Monde Régional - Maison de Sailles.
Small miniature goblet turned in wood then decorated with a knife.
The body features geometric decoration composed of lattices, lozenges and deeply incised cross-hatched bands. This ornamental vocabulary belongs to the popular productions of the Massif Central, where geometric motifs constitute one of the main decorative repertoires employed on everyday objects.
The decoration develops over the entire surface and is framed by two engraved friezes running under the lip and at the base of the vessel. The turned foot itself is emphasized by a hatched pattern echoing the overall decoration of the object.
The manufacture combines lathe work and knife carving. The whole has a beautiful brown patina of old use.
The underside retains an old handwritten collector's label.
