A Bit of History:
Date letters were affixed periodically by an inspector from the Bureau of Weights and Measures to certify that the vessel met calibration standards. By cataloging all the affixed letters, one can determine the period during which the measuring vessel was in use. The metric system, established in 1791, took several decades to become widely adopted due to users’ resistance to change, but little by little these uniform cylindrical measures eventually replaced the pitchers, which, it is true, a variety of interesting shapes and regional characteristics specific to their place of manufacture, but also an infinite number of different calibrations from one city to another and often even from one village to another, no matter how close they were. This significantly complicated trade. The measuring cup presented here is one of the first to have been put into circulation during the period 1795–1800
