Shaker Cup And Saucer, Saint-cloud Soft-paste Porcelain, Circa 1722–1766
- A soft-paste porcelain trembler cup and saucer, decorated in shades of blue with underglaze-glazed lambrequins, produced by the Saint-Cloud factory around 1722–1766.
- This cup and saucer are part of a tea set (teapot, cups, sugar bowl) documented in the production records of the Saint-Cloud manufactory circa 1722–1766. This is a “trembleuse,” a model invented by the Saint-Cloud Manufactory in which the cup is held in place on its saucer by a circular rim; the cup is effectively “inserted” into its saucer, ensuring good stability. In the early 18th century, the development of these porcelain pieces designed for beverages went hand in hand with the rise in consumption of “exotic” goods that had recently arrived in the West (tea, coffee, chocolate).
- The cup was molded in relief and adorned with a band of gadroons. Its elegant monochromatic blue decoration adorns the exterior of the cup, including a border at the base. This same blue-decorated border is found on the inner rim of the saucer.
- Attribution to the Saint-Cloud manufactory is confirmed by the presence of a signature beneath the cup and beneath the saucer. This signature also allows for a more precise dating between 1722 and 1766.
- In good condition; note a crack at the base of the handle and a few firing flaws (see photos).
- Dimensions - Cup height: 7.2 cm, cup diameter: 7.5 cm, saucer height: 3.5 cm, saucer diameter: 13.3 cm
