Around 1900. Pen-and-ink Caricature
A curious caricature, created around the turn of the century, apparently depicting a president of the Republic triumphing over a woman lying on the ground—who could very well be the Republic herself.
Nothing is certain, as the message is somewhat cryptic; one reference reads “Théâtre de Bois-Coco, etc.,” which may have been understood at the time, but we have since lost the meaning of this allusion.
Interestingly, the woman on the ground—and notably—is depicted being thrown into the air below.
My explanation is, of course, just a hypothesis.
In any case, very much in the spirit of the 1900s, this is a true curiosity.
For framing—for a small additional fee, I can take care of it using a period-style frame, such as an oak one with gilded trim, at the collector’s discretion.
