The Last Moments Of The Duke Of Berry. Engraving After A Painting By Evariste Fragonard

Artist: Evariste Fragonard
The assassination of the Duke of Berry on the night of february 13, 1820, came as a shock to the French monarchy, which was in the process of being reestablished following the Napoleonic era.
Charles Ferdinand d’Artois, nephew of Louis XVIII and heir to the throne, died without male issue.
Marie Caroline of the Two Sicilies, however, gave birth to a son, Henri Dieudonné, who was nicknamed “the miracle child” because she did not know she was pregnant on the night of her husband’s death.
Evariste Fragonard (1780–1850) then painted the duke’s final moments, surrounded by the king and his close relatives.
This large engraving, in plano, reproduces that painting, executed by Girardet.
Beautifully executed, it is in its original, unopened frame by Hoeth, a high-quality framer active in Lyon.
Dust has accumulated inside the frame over time, which explains why the glass is dirty on the inside.
Note the water stains and foxing, which can be easily cleaned; the engraving is well worth the effort, as it is not commonly found.
