Edouard Detaille. 1883. Portrait Of A Soldier In An Illuminated Initial.
Artist: Alphonse De Neuville
Edouard Detaille (1848-1912), although still somewhat forgotten by us, is one of the most prominent figures in 19th-century painting, a true star of the Salons during his lifetime. Born to a father who was a friend of Horace Vernet, he quickly developed a taste for uniforms and apprenticed in the studio of Ernest Messonier. His work ethic was boundless, tirelessly working on all subjects to perfect his drawing skills. He painted vast frescoes, patriotically illustrating the futile exploits of French soldiers during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. It is this energy and precision that one feels when observing a drawing by this artist, recognizable at first glance. Our drawing is bold and incisive, executed with a very fine pen, and highlighted with white on the left for the face. It should be noted that it is related to the previous drawing by Alphonse de Neuville (same format, same connection to an initial letter evoking the beginning of a chapter in a large, luxurious book), yet separated by five years in its creation, which for the moment remains unexplained. Similarly, it is presented in an identical mount, enhanced with watercolor overlays, and with a similar frame of the same format. The frame here is in perfect condition. On the back, there is the framer's label and number. in the corner which could be an exhibition reference. Very good original condition, never opened. Signed, dated. Dimensions of the visible drawing: 23 cm x 14 cm
