Circa 1830. Miniature. Biscuit Porcelain Portrait Of Alexandre Brongniart
The early 19th century was a period of significant scientific development. Alexandre Brongniart (1770-1847) was a chemist, mineralogist, paleontologist, geologist, and zoologist. Having published important works in these fields, he became director of the Sèvres porcelain factory in 1800, where his research found practical application. He was elected to the French Academy of Sciences in 1815. It is not surprising to find his portrait executed in white biscuit porcelain, as was common practice at the prestigious factory he directed. It dates from the 1830s or 1840s, and the sitter was already elderly. The mahogany frame is supported by a charming brass bail.
