Alexander Visiting Darius's Family
Artist: D'après Charles Le Brun
The painting by Charles le Brun, Alexander visiting the family of Darius, was an extraordinary success in the 17th century. It was distributed as an engraving, and copied tirelessly in different formats. The scene is edifying, the mother of the king of Persia asks for the pardon of the victor, and addresses himself by mistake to Hephaistion, Alexander's companion. The Clemency of the new sovereign is an example to follow, with educational value in the great century. Here is an intimate reduction of this work, beautifully treated, and highlighted by a deep frame with beautiful old gilding. Fairly recent relining, and good state of conservation.
