"The Painter And The Whims Of The Client 1/ Pen Around 1840"
Following the English fashion, caricature developed in France under Charles X and Louis Philippe, maliciously pointing out the failings of the triumphant bourgeoisie. Commissioned painters were subject to the whims and compunction-filled advice of a self-important clientele, unaware of its own arrogance. This drawing, full of life, humorously sketches the ridiculousness of the fop being painted. The quality of the line, precise and careful, inevitably brings to mind Gavarni. Apparently unsigned, but enclosed in an impeccable modern frame, the drawing is in excellent condition.
