Three Shepherd Figures From A Neapolitan Nativity Scene, Made Of Polychrome Terracotta, Early 19th Century
A group consisting of three original shepherd figures from a Neapolitan nativity scene, made of polychrome terracotta and dating to the early 19th century.
The three figures are of high-quality craftsmanship, characterized by expressive faces and polychrome painting that is still largely preserved. The rendering of the skin tones, hairstyles, and facial expressions reflects the tradition of Neapolitan nativity scene sculpture.
On the back, remnants of the original structure made of tow and fabric—which connected the heads to the mannequin—are still visible. As was customary in antique Neapolitan nativity scenes, the body was constructed with a core of iron wire and tow, subsequently covered with hand-sewn fabric garments.
The lot includes three different figures, likely belonging to the same nativity scene composition, now offered together to preserve their historical and collectible unity.
The overall condition is good, with normal signs of aging, slight wear on the polychrome paint, and minor imperfections consistent with the age and original use.
