Technical notes and condition — gilding and lacquer
The gilding on the settee is generally well preserved, showing natural age-related wear with areas where the bole gently emerges, a characteristic feature of authentic 18th-century gilding. Minor chips and abrasions are present but without major losses or structural issues.
The chairs show a more pronounced wear to the gilding: several exposed wood areas can be seen on the upper backrests as well as on the lower parts of the legs and frame, indicating long use or small historical impacts. The light lacquer appears to have been partially refreshed at some point, likely during a past reupholstering.
Structurally, the suite is in overall good condition: the settee is sound and well preserved, while the chairs would benefit from light conservation work focused on gilding and lacquer. Despite this, the ensemble remains harmonious, authentic and highly decorative.
Artistic description
The settee features a double oval backrest with finely carved and gilded floral motifs. The chairs replicate the same design and decorative vocabulary. The patterned upholstery enhances the warmth of the gilded surfaces. The tapered, fluted legs terminate in elegant turned feet.
