Delightful mid-19th century travel writing box, made of burr wood with fine rosewood stringing. A small masterpiece of cabinetmaking, designed to combine elegance and functionality, crafted with remarkable attention to detail inside and out.
The sloping lid opens to reveal a writing surface in blue velvet, complete with compartments for pens, inkwells and correspondence. It also conceals a secret drawer and hidden spaces, once used to keep documents or small valuables. Of the original pair of inkwells, one is still present, the other missing.
