Louis XVI Salon - Aubusson Tapestry
A sumptuous late 18th-century salon set, including a cabriolet-back sofa and its suite of four fauteuils à la reine.
The carved and gilded beechwood frame features a rich ornamental repertoire typical of the Neoclassical taste: the backs are highlighted with a row of pearls and twisted ribbons, while the crosspieces are finely molded. The ensemble rests on spindle-shaped feet with filleted flutes, surmounted by connecting dice with florets.
This furniture retains its original tapestry upholstery from the Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson. The weaving with wool and silk yarns deploys a figurative decoration of country and animal scenes (inspired by La Fontaine's fables) in medallions surrounded by flowery garlands. The freshness of the surviving colors testifies to the quality of execution at the Creuse manufacture in the 18th century.
.Condition : The gilding shows a very fine period patina with some wear from use. The tapestry needs to be reviewed (see photographs): although complete and of great historical value, it shows fragility and pronounced wear on the seats. A conservation restoration or refurbishment by a specialized workshop is required to restore this ensemble to its full glory.
.High-quality furniture, representative of the refinement of aristocratic residences at the end of the Ancien Régime.
