The Wedding At Cana – Circle Of Paolo Veronese, Venetian School, 16th Century

An important painting depicting The Wedding at Cana, a Gospel episode in which Christ performs the miracle of turning water into wine. The work features a complex composition set within monumental classical architecture, brought to life by numerous figures, servants, musicians, and animals. The perspective, narrative richness, and arrangement of the figures link the painting to the figurative tradition that developed around Paolo Veronese in the second half of the 16th century. Of particular interest is the presence of numerous pentimenti, documented by X-ray analysis. Several figures were modified during the painting’s creation, including the orientation of their faces and their relationship to the group of musicians. These revisions attest to a complex compositional process and distinguish the work from a simple mechanical reproduction of a preexisting model. The painting underwent a thorough diagnostic examination, including X-rays, stratigraphic analysis, microscopy, SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XRF.The analyses identified historical materials and pigments fully consistent with 16th-century Venetian painting, including white lead, cinnabar, minium, azurite, ochres, and green earth. Of particular note is the presence in the sky of an initial smaltino layer, subsequently finished with natural ultramarine blue derived from lapis lazuli. The combination of technical evidence, materials used, and stylistic characteristics allows the work to be cautiously attributed to the circle of Paolo Veronese. The painting has recently undergone conservative restoration and is now fully legible. It is presented in a newly made frame inspired by 18th-century Venetian models.Period: second half of the 16th centurySchool: VenetianTechnique: oil on canvasDimensions: 100 × 71 cmComplete diagnostic and photographic documentation available, including images taken before, during, and after restoration, X-rays, and scientific analysis reports. For additional photographs or information, we will be happy to respond to any request.
