This is a beautiful Post-Impressionist composition by Jean Rémond, depicting a shepherdess in the Creuse Valley. His brushwork is very characteristic, as is his color palette, dominated by shades of yellow, orange, brown, purple, green, gray, and sky blue.
Jean Rémond is known to have painted very regularly in Corrèze, much less so in Creuse, but as a neighboring region, he must have made a few occasional short visits there, as this work demonstrates. Otherwise, Rémond had three favorite regions where he regularly set up his easel: Lorraine, Brittany, and Corrèze.
A painter of landscapes and genre scenes, he was born in Nancy in 1872 and died in Paris in 1913. He was a student of Cormon and A. Richemond.
In 1908, he co-founded La Cimaise, a group of painters, sculptors, and decorative artists who exhibited together at the Galerie Georges Petit, then at the Galerie Devambez in Paris from 1909 to 1922.
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and became a member in 1903, the year he was awarded a Third-Class Medal; a Second-Class Medal was awarded to him in 1906.
In 1905, he exhibited at the sixth “Arts Réunis” exhibition at Petit’s in Paris, a significant collection of oil paintings including “Riverbank,” “Small Harbor,” “Storm Scene,” and “Sunbeam.”
He exhibited at the Salon de Nancy, notably in 1907 with two paintings Chapelle de la Clarté and Snow Scene, and in 1908 with two watercolors, Chapelle à Portpodec and Maison à Portpodec. In 1909, he participated in the Retrospective Exhibition organized by the S.L.A.A. of Nancy to honor Lorraine artists who had won awards at the Paris Salons: View from the Spanish Pyrenees, Joy, Church of Penmarch ...
In May 1913, a retrospective exhibition of the artist’s works was held at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and on that occasion, Gaston Varenne published a major and thoroughly documented study on Jean Rémond in the “Revue lorraine illustrée,” 1914, pp. 25–40.
