André Verger (1912-1990) The Coast In Charente Maritime. Ile De Ré, Oléron, La Rochelle, Balande
Artist: André Verger (1912-1990)
Beautiful oil on cardboard by AndréVerger depicting a coastline in Charente Maritime circa 1960, signed lower left.
Size of the painting alone out of frame 38x46cm
So this is a new post-impressionist composition with a fauve tendency by André Verger, as 9 times out of 10 he paints the Charente coastline, here animated by sailboats, with buildings in the distance that can help identify the location. I haven't managed to do it yet, but most probably the coast between Royan and La Rochelle. As usual in this period, he uses a highly stylized touch and a soft, pastel palette. We're obviously reminded of two of his masters, Gaston Balande and Albert Marquet.
André Verger is a painter affiliated with the Charentaise school, havingBeaux Arts in Paris, he turned to his beloved Charente Maritime regionCharente Maritime, which he would paint from top to bottom, passing throughRochelle of course, but also Île de Ré, Île d'Oléron, Royan,Fouras, Rochefort, etc, etc... just like many other painters of theCharentaise school, most of whom he worked alongside, such as Boucart,Suire, Enard, Langlade, Charlopeau etc... During his lifetime, he exhibitedevery summer.
Today, his works can be seen in museums such as La Rochelle, Bordeaux and Saintes....
