Louis XVI-era Pen Holder.
Thisexceptional late 18th-century pen holder is made of yellowand green gold and midnight blue lacquer; at each end, a small goldcap, chased with a frieze of leaves and a braid, holds a featheron one side and a small pencil on the other. Thecentral section, midnight blue or perhaps black, is studded with stars; inexcellent condition, this object has retained itssharkskin case. It bears 18th-century hallmarks that we havebeen unable to decipher. A very similar example, though without its case,is held at the Louvre Museum in the Departmentof Art Objects from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, andmodern times under inventory number OA2372. One small star is missing; case dimensions: 13.8 cm;closed penholder dimensions: 13.2 cm. Gross weight of the penholder: 25.90gr.
