1877 Model English Helmet For Non-commissioned Officers
Victorian helmet, Model 1877/78, intended for non-commissioned officers on field duty. The helmet shell, covered with cork, features six outer panels that are heavily bleached and pierced with holes for insignia at the front. Lining with a removable ventilation dome. The interior is lined with green cotton, dated 1878 and bearing the “wide arrow” mark, as well as the regimental and battalion marks “1st 45” of the Nottinghamshire Infantry Regiment (Sherwood Foresters). One brass chin strap hook is present; the other is missing. The leather sweatband is partially missing but reveals the corrugated cardboard strip that, along with the cork spacers, provided ventilation. Unfortunately, the helmet shows signs of deformation and damage, notably a crack in the visor. Its price reflects this damage and its fragility; however, it is extremely rare to find Model 1877 helmets for non-commissioned officers on the market.
