Willem Roelofs 1822–1897 & Henri Louis Permeke 1849–1912 (les Polders Guild)

This is a rare direct collaborative work, which was a common practice in the 19th century.

* In 1874 , Willem Roelofs was living in Brussels, where he was a leading figure in the art world and a recognized master. The young Hendrik Lodewijk Permeke was studying there and moved in his circle of influence. The artist Willem Roelofs generally painted the major elements, such as the vast cloudy sky (see photo) and the overall structure of the polder landscape. The student or collaborator (Henri Louis Permeke) was entrusted with specific parts—the figures (the people working near the haystack and the peasant woman and her dog). Henri Louis Permeke is none other than the father of Constant Permeke.

Frame: original frame (in very good condition; minor wear on the sides, otherwise excellent)
Condition: in its original state, heavily yellowed by nicotine; original varnish; once cleaned, the work will be very luminous; this is a summer scene, and the rendering of the sky with its flat areas of colored paint is superb  (small chip in the paint layer at the bottom center—see photo)
