Hendrik Van Steenwijk II ( 1580 - 1649 ) Esoteric Scene
Artist : Hendrik van Steenwijk II ( 1580 - 1649 )
Country : Flanders , Antwerp
Subject : it seems to me that this is an esoteric scene where a woman with a double face sits in a skeleton armchair and makes incantations to the dark forces. She is drinking a potion from half the top of a skull on a weightless table, with attributes on it for permutation in the other world. The scene takes place in the basement of Antwerp Cathedral
Condition: the work was restored by our restorer from Turin, who worked for museums before moving to Belgium
Support: oil on oak panel
Short biography: Steinwick, known as the Younger II , born around 1580 in Antwerp and died in 1649 in Leiden or The Hague, was a Flemish Baroque painter, who is known for his works illustrating architectural interiors, but also biblical scenes and scenes of witchcraft * works of this kind are extremely rare on the market . Never sold at public auction, it comes from a private collection in Luxembourg.
Frame: no frame for the moment but I'll find one of the best photos will follow shortly ** The work will be on view from Saturday at ' Antiques Center Sablon ' 39 Place du Grand Sablon , 1000 Bruxelles
