The Painter Rutger Van Langevelt (1635–1695), Portrait Of The Steward, 1663, At The Oud Burgeren Gasthuis

Artist: Rutger Van Langevelt 1635 - 1695
Country: Holland
Artist: Rutger Van Langevelt 1635–1695
City: Nijmegen
Period: circa 1663
History:

A professor from Amsterdam identified the subject; historical note: a larger version of this model’s portrait is held in the RKD archives in The Hague (see second photo). This painting belongs to the Oud Burgeren Gasthuis in Nijmegen and was restored in The Hague by C. van

Bohemen around 1925.

It was featured in the “Gelderse Gezichten” exhibition at the

Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen in 2002–2003, under number 43, accompanied by a small color reproduction (available at the following address: https://www.boekwinkeltjes.nl/ b/204239410/Gelderse-gezichten-Drie-eeuwen-portretkunst/).

The painting apparently bears a monogram G:V:L: in the upper left corner and is clearly dated 1676 on a book, a date that corresponds perfectly with the subject’s title. To his right are a bell, books, and writing instruments.

Research has revealed that he was the steward of the Gasthuis. He has been identified as Gerard (Gerrit or Gerryt) van Lijnden, who died in 1677 and took office in 1654. From 1663 onward, he served as the institution’s accountant. The portrait has been attributed to the Nijmegen painter Rutger van Langevelt *, on view at Sablon Antiques Center, 39 Place du Grand Sablon, 1000

Brussels (condition: in its original state; three windows were restored by the

restorer to remove three panes, revealing superb paint layers)

Frame and stretcher: although the frame is oval-shaped for the portrait, the back reveals the original octagonal stretcher.
Dimensions of the artwork without frame: 76 cm x 60 cm
Note: oil on canvas, old canvas backing (the canvas is not crushed and is in superb condition)
