Short biography: Since 1945, he has taught as a professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin-Charlottenburg, located in the Western occupation zone (later West Berlin).
A longtime member of the Communist Party (KPD), his political views led to growing friction with Western university authorities at the dawn of the Cold War.
The year 1949 marked the end of his collaboration with Karl Hofer on the publication of the leading art journal Bildende Kunst (which they had co-edited since 1947).
A former figure in the constructivist avant-garde and proletarian art movements of the 1920s, Nerlinger began to align himself strictly with Soviet cultural policy in 1949.
As the German Democratic Republic (GDR) was officially founded in October 1949, he laid the foundations for his aesthetic allegiance to “state socialist realism” , which would ultimately drive him to flee to East Berlin two years later, in 1951
