Ernest Courtois de Bonnencontre (1859–1955) was a French Post-Impressionist painter renowned for his South-american landscapes.
He has been trained at the School of Fine Arts in Dijon, an by Jean-Léon Gérome.After receiving a bronze medal at the 1900 World's Fair, he left France for an extensive journey through Latin America before settling permanently in Santiago, Chile, where he passed away in 1955.
He notably immortalized Chile’s Valle del Río Colorado in both day and night scenes.
The artist loved painting the solitude of these vast open spaces, enhanced by silvery moonlight. The vast majority of
his Andean landscapes remain highly sought-after and are found primarily in private collections around the world; however, he is well represented in the National Museum in Santiago, Chile, and the museum in Dole.
