Louis Valtat 1869-1952: Woman With A Fur Collar, Charcoal And Sanguine, Stamp At The Bottom,
Louis Valtat (1869–1952) was a French painter and engraver, now considered one of the forerunners of Fauvism, even though he was never officially part of the Fauves group around Matisse and Derain. His highly colorful palette, impasto techniques, and simplification of forms place him at the crossroads of Neo-Impressionism and the Nabis. He created canvases with very vibrant colors that foreshadowed Fauvism and were noticed at the Salon des Indépendants in 1896.
