Carlos-reymond (1884–1970) Village View In Spring, Oil On Paper, Signed Lower Right.

In the early 20th century, he joined his family in Saint-Tropez, then a true magnet for artists seeking the Mediterranean light. Born in Paris in 1884, Carlos Reymond saw his destiny as a painter take shape through a series of decisive encounters. At just sixteen, he crossed paths with Claude Monet, who encouraged him to pursue the path he already dreamed of following.

There, he discovered the dazzling world of Paul Signac—a master of Neo-Impressionism and Divisionism—whose influence left a profound mark on him. The young painter also befriended André Dunoyer de Segonzac and later associated with Louis Valtat, Charles Camoin, Henri Manguin, and Henri Lebasque; he would go on to marry Lebasque’s daughter, Marthe, in 1919. Saint-Tropez became his artistic playground. Reymond, Signac, and Henri Person were often seen roaming the slopes of the Citadel, easels tucked under their arms, capturing the vibrant colors of the Var coast. After his early Parisian views, Reymond devoted himself entirely to Mediterranean landscapes, creating some of the most sensitive pictorial portrayals of the region. A friend of Henri Matisse from 1941 onwards, he enjoyed a prolific career, exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants between 1905 and 1921, and subsequently showing his work regularly in Paris until 1960. An understated yet essential artist, Carlos Reymond remains one of the most inspired exponents of Neo-Impressionism, driven by the light of the South of France and the friendships that shaped his body of work.
