Artist: Caravaggesque movement of Flanders Country: Belgium, Bruges - Ghent Period: 1710 - 1730 Subject: Pietà in the style of the Bolognese painters; the scene is presented in sfumato, and the Virgin's blue is inspired by the pigment lapis lazuli. Provenance: Former charity sale in a deconsecrated convent in Flanders. Support and intervention: Original canvas; cleaning was necessary as the work was illegible. Minor retouching and re-stretching of the canvas were required. Frame: The frame is new, made of gilded wood in a classical Regency style.
